The Trump administration has denied any support for the potential involvement of Chinese peacekeepers in a hypothetical demilitarized zone proposed in ongoing peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. The discussions come as all three nations continue to explore ways to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

The Financial Times recently reported that President Donald Trump had considered Russian President Vladimir Putin’s suggestion to invite China to provide peacekeeping forces for the proposed neutral zone. However, a senior Trump administration official clarified to Newsweek that “there has been no discussion” of such a proposal.

“President Trump and his national security team continue to engage with Russian and Ukrainian officials toward a bilateral meeting to stop the killing and end the war,” the official said. “As many world leaders have stated, this war would have never happened if President Trump was in office. There was no discussion of Chinese peacekeepers. It is not in the national interest to further negotiate these issues publicly.”

Ongoing Peace Efforts

Trump, alongside key officials including Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has held months of discussions with Russian and Ukrainian representatives in an attempt to broker peace and encourage Russia to end its invasion.

The former president has repeatedly highlighted his track record in diplomacy, including the Abraham Accords, and expressed confidence that he could bring about a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia. Over the past six months, however, he has faced a more complex geopolitical environment than initially anticipated.

Despite the challenges, Trump succeeded in convening a face-to-face meeting with Putin in Alaska this month, followed by talks with Ukraine. The administration is reportedly exploring a potential trilateral meeting involving the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine.

Neutral Zone Proposal

European officials have floated the idea of establishing a neutral zone along the Russia-Ukraine border to help end the conflict. While Russia has reportedly responded positively, the U.S. has not participated in these discussions.

The proposal would require peacekeepers, ideally from a neutral country or organization. Reports suggested that Russia proposed China as a potential contributor, a notion immediately rejected by Ukraine, which has consistently opposed the involvement of nations allied with Russia.

China has previously supported Russia through energy purchases and alleged weapons assistance, further complicating its role as a neutral party. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly dismissed the idea of Chinese involvement, citing China’s lack of support at the start of the conflict. Instead, Ukraine has expressed interest in involving Turkish forces in any peacekeeping mission, a proposal Turkey has welcomed.

Perspectives and Reactions

The Chinese Mission to the United Nations highlighted China’s peacekeeping contributions, noting that 24 Chinese peacekeepers have died in the line of duty since 1990 and that China remains a leading contributor to U.N. peacekeeping missions.

Trump reiterated his stance on Truth Social, asserting that the war “would have NEVER happened if I were President” and criticizing current U.S. policy under President Joe Biden for limiting Ukraine’s ability to respond offensively to Russian aggression.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in a recent interview with NBC, emphasized that Russia’s focus is not territorial expansion but the welfare of people living in contested areas.
