The United States is currently investigating the unauthorized release of classified documents detailing Israel’s military strategies in response to Iran’s recent ballistic missile attacks. Three U.S. officials confirmed to The Associated Press that the documents, attributed to the U.S. Geospatial Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency, appear to be legitimate.
The leaked documents, marked top secret, were first reported by CNN and Axios after being shared on the Telegram messaging app. They reveal that Israel has been mobilizing military assets in preparation for a potential strike against Iran, following a missile attack on October 1.
These documents were shared within the “Five Eyes” intelligence alliance, which includes the U.S., Great Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. The investigation aims to uncover how the documents were obtained, including whether the leak was a deliberate action by someone within the U.S. intelligence community or the result of a cyber breach. Officials are also assessing whether any additional sensitive information has been compromised.
The Pentagon has acknowledged awareness of the reports but declined to comment further. Meanwhile, the Israeli military has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the leak.
This incident follows a tense period in U.S.-Israeli relations, with the U.S. urging Israel to consider a cease-fire in Gaza after the elimination of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, while Israel remains resolute in its commitment to respond to Iran’s aggression.
The leaked information, reportedly gathered through satellite image analysis, has drawn parallels to previous leaks of classified materials, such as those by Air National Guardsman Jack Teixeira earlier this year.
The Telegram channel that initially shared the documents claims to be based in Tehran and has a history of posting content supportive of Iran’s military initiatives in the region.
