Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a stark warning that Ukraine could face an “Afghanistan 2.0” scenario if the United States compromises on key demands in resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Zelensky’s comments follow statements from U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and former President Donald Trump, both of whom have expressed skepticism about Ukraine’s prospects for joining NATO in the near future. Last week, Hegseth dismissed Ukraine’s goals of NATO membership and reclaiming territories lost to Russia as “unrealistic.” Trump, in turn, called Hegseth’s comments “pretty accurate,” also emphasizing Russia’s opposition to Ukraine’s NATO ambitions.

Zelensky, speaking in an interview with the German ARD public broadcaster, strongly disagreed with the U.S. position. He warned that the U.S. should not “take that off the table” in the peace talks with Russia, reflecting concerns that any perceived abandonment of Ukraine’s NATO aspirations could lead to disastrous consequences. “I don’t think anyone is interested in an Afghanistan 2.0,” he stated, cautioning against repeating past mistakes of premature withdrawal.

Zelensky’s warning comes just one day before a high-level meeting between U.S. and Russian delegations in Saudi Arabia, where discussions included the possibility of direct talks between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, which was initially planned under Trump but carried out by President Biden, led to a rapid collapse of the Afghan government and the Taliban’s swift return to power—an outcome that continues to be heavily criticized for its hasty and chaotic nature.
