Anura Dissanayake was officially sworn in as the 9th Executive President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka this morning. The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya at a ceremony held at the Presidential Secretariat.

In his inaugural address, President Dissanayake vowed to usher in a “new era of Renaissance” for the nation, calling for the collective efforts of all Sri Lankans to achieve this ambitious vision. “Today, I take on the responsibility of leading this great nation, and I promise to work tirelessly to fulfill that duty,” he declared.

He mentioned that he is not a magician who can do it alone or with his team.

He stated that Sri Lanka understands the current crisis and that everyone must work together as a nation to overcome it, emphasizing that international support is necessary.

“The most important feature of our country’s democracy is that the people choose their ruler. Democracy does not end with voting in an election; we need to strengthen the structures that uphold our democracy. I promise to do my utmost for the democracy of this country.

“No leader has rejected the transfer of power during the election. Accordingly, former President Ranil Wickremesinghe accepted the mandate graciously and is to be commended for his dedication and example in facilitating a democratic transfer of power.”

“Our country is facing significant challenges. Our politics must be cleaner. We need a healthy political culture, and we are ready to make sacrifices for that.

“The public does not hold a favorable view of our country’s politics, which is why we are working to restore respect for politicians.

“It is not believed that this deep crisis can be overcome by a single person or government.

“I am not a magician; I am an ordinary citizen of this country. There are known challenges as well as unknowns. My goal is to utilize the available resources, explore the unknowns, and make better decisions.”

“I aim to be part of a collective effort. Every citizen has a responsibility in ending this crisis, and we expect everyone to contribute.”

“I accept that I have the foremost responsibility in this role. In practice, I strive to engage with ordinary citizens.”

“Our country needs international support. We are not a state that should stand alone. Additionally, industrialists and farmers play a significant role in building the nation, and I believe they will support the government’s efforts.”

“The democracy of our country has entrusted me with the presidency.”

“I have a clear understanding of our fiscal composition and priorities. We are also working to build trust with the citizens who did not support us.”

The ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, political leaders, and enthusiastic supporters, all hopeful for a brighter future under Dissanayake’s leadership.
