Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the Samagi Jana Sandanaya party, declared his intention to contest for the position of Prime Minister in the forthcoming parliamentary elections, a decision supported by both senior and junior members of the party. This announcement came during a press briefing following a pivotal meeting held at the party’s office, where a proposal to nominate him as the Prime Ministerial candidate was passed unanimously.
“We are committed to providing strong leadership, and I am honored to accept this responsibility,” Premadasa stated, emphasizing his determination to lead the party in the elections. He further clarified that there would be no alliance with United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in this electoral endeavor, signaling a clear separation between the two political factions.
Meanwhile, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa also made headlines today by announcing his decision to distance himself from any alliance with the UNP. Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna party’s politburo, Rajapaksa underscored the importance of strategic planning as the general election approaches. “We must prepare our political activities carefully to ensure we emerge as a strong party capable of securing a majority in Parliament,” he asserted.
