The tragic events of October 1987 were recalled as the Jaffna Teaching Hospital marked the 37th anniversary of the massacre carried out by Indian peacekeeping forces. On Monday, hospital staff, family members of the victims, and community members gathered to honor the 68 individuals, including 21 hospital staff and 47 patients, who lost their lives during the attack.

Participants lit flowers in memory of the deceased, with many attendees visibly emotional as they remembered their lost loved ones. Among the victims were three doctors and three nurses, all caught in the violence that erupted during what was supposed to be a peacekeeping mission.

On that fateful day, Indian troops, commanded by Lieutenant General Dipendra Singh, stormed the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, leading to the mass killing of unarmed civilians. In the years since, no investigations or compensations have been provided by either the Indian or Sri Lankan governments, leaving families without closure.
