After a year of remarkable achievements on the international stage, Sri Lanka Football is preparing for an exciting and action-packed domestic football calendar in 2025. The Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) is focusing on expanding the domestic football landscape, with a renewed emphasis on youth development and regional competitions.

The national team’s success in 2024, which saw Sri Lanka rise from 205th to 200th in the FIFA world rankings, marks a significant milestone for Sri Lankan football. FFSL President, Jaswar Umar, praised the national team’s accomplishments, noting that the federation’s strategies are beginning to yield results. “The most challenging aspect of football administration is achieving success with the national team, and through carefully crafted strategies, we’ve made our country proud,” Umar said. With eight international matches scheduled for 2025, he expressed confidence in further improving Sri Lanka’s footballing status on the global stage.

As the federation moves forward, it is placing a major focus on enhancing the domestic game. All domestic competitions are set to begin in 2025, with increased funding and support directed toward regional leagues. This initiative aims to boost the appeal and engagement of football across the country. FFSL has already engaged with clubs from the Super League and Champions League to ensure readiness for the new season. While all 14 Champions League clubs are set to begin their tournament by the end of January 2025, Super League clubs have requested additional time, suggesting a start in March 2025 to allow for better preparation.

In addition to strengthening domestic competitions, FFSL is also launching several new youth development programs. A key initiative for 2025 is the introduction of the Y19 League, a new youth competition that will take place across 55 regional leagues. This move is supported by a commercial partner, reflecting growing interest in the development of youth football in Sri Lanka. Alongside the Y19 League, the FFSL is planning to expand youth leagues, school competitions, and women’s football initiatives, including a new women’s league. The federation is also committed to improving coaching and refereeing standards through targeted training programs.

With these initiatives, FFSL is setting the stage for a transformative year in 2025, looking to build on the momentum gained from international success in 2024. By fostering talent, promoting inclusivity, and providing more opportunities for all levels of the game, Sri Lanka Football is poised for a bright future.
