Alex Soros, the 39-year-old chair of the Open Society Foundations (OSF), is stepping forward to shape his own vision for the global philanthropic empire built by his father, George Soros. In an exclusive interview with The Financial Times, Alex candidly discussed his approach to philanthropy, politics, and the ongoing challenges posed by right-wing attacks, including from figures like Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
Alex, the son of the Hungarian Holocaust survivor and financier, inherited a legacy of political giving and advocacy for democracy and human rights. Since taking the helm of OSF, Alex has significantly downsized staff numbers, a move he justifies as necessary to cut through bureaucracy and refocus the organization on its core mission. He has directed the foundation’s efforts toward climate issues, civil rights, and U.S. politics, while also continuing his father’s legacy of support for European democracy.
Despite the foundation’s growing impact, Alex is not without his critics. Some view him as a “radical nepo baby” or accuse him of lacking his father’s commitment to Europe. Soros dismisses these critiques, citing his own vision for OSF’s future, including continued work in Ukraine amid the ongoing war with Russia.
While deeply involved in global affairs, Alex is also an unapologetic liberal megadonor. He and his father were major financial supporters of Kamala Harris’ campaign, contributing more than $85 million in the 2024 election cycle. Despite attacks from the right, including accusations from Trump allies of being part of a “global conspiracy,” Alex Soros is resolute. He sees these claims as baseless conspiracies, countering with a call to “fight back.”
Alex’s approach to foreign policy is equally firm. He remains passionate about the situation in Ukraine, openly critical of Trump’s stance on Russia, and supportive of a two-state solution in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. On a personal note, he also discussed his engagement to Huma Abedin, further cementing his status as part of a high-profile liberal power couple in New York.
