Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra has unveiled its XEV 9e, a compact electric SUV that combines cutting-edge technology, impressive performance, and an affordable price point to challenge EV market leaders like Tesla. Deliveries are set to begin in February 2025, with production starting at 90,000 units annually and scaling up to 200,000 units by March 2026.
The XEV 9e is built to impress, boasting a powerful 282-BHP electric motor that propels it from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds. Its long-range capabilities—656 km on a single charge (WLTP)—address range anxiety while offering rugged SUV aesthetics designed for both urban roads and outdoor adventures.
The SUV’s battery technology comes from industry leader BYD, utilizing advanced Blade battery packs assembled at Mahindra’s Chennai facility. Two variants are available: a 59 kWh battery with a 542-km range and a 79 kWh option with a 656-km range. Charging is efficient, with a 140 kW DC fast charger able to replenish the battery from 20% to 80% in just 20 minutes.
Inside, the XEV 9e is as luxurious as it is practical. Features include a three-screen dashboard, a panoramic sunroof, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, and Level 2 ADAS technology. Safety is paramount, with seven airbags, fatigue alerts, and a 5-star Bharat NCAP crash rating.
The XEV 9e starts at $26,000, making it a competitive option in the electric SUV market. Alongside the BE 6e, unveiled in November 2024 with a starting price of $22,500, the XEV 9e is part of Mahindra’s ambitious EV strategy, which includes five additional models by 2030.
Mahindra, with its decades-long legacy and a $2 billion investment in EV development, aims to capture 20% of its SUV sales from electric vehicles by 2027. The XEV 9e’s combination of luxury, performance, and affordability positions it as a strong competitor in the global EV race, blending Indian ingenuity with global ambition.
