Robots perform in perfect synchronisation, dressed in festive outfits

In a groundbreaking moment at China’s iconic Spring Festival Gala, a group of robots dressed in floral jackets took center stage, dancing in perfect synchrony to a version of a traditional northeastern Chinese folk dance. The extraordinary performance, which aired on Chinese New Year’s Eve, captivated a global audience of over a billion viewers, making the Gala the world’s most-watched television event each year.

The robots were brought to life by the celebrated Chinese director Zhang Yimou, renowned for his work on the 2008 Beijing Olympics opening ceremony. In a nod to the Year of the Snake, the humanoid robots, dressed in festive outfits, were choreographed to reflect China’s advancing technological landscape, symbolizing a blend of tradition and modernity. The intricate dance, which featured human performers from the Xinjiang Art Institute, highlighted both cultural heritage and the rise of artificial intelligence in the country.

The robots were created by Unitree, a leading robotics company from Hangzhou known for its innovative robot dogs. The humanoid version of the robot, named Fuxi—a name that also refers to the creation god in Chinese mythology, symbolizing blessings and a serpent’s tail—was the star of the performance. This connection to the snake, a symbol of wisdom and power, resonated with the occasion of the Chinese New Year.

This year’s Gala, which has long been a highlight of Chinese cultural celebrations, is known for introducing cutting-edge elements alongside its traditional fare. While many families across China were gathered around tables sharing dumplings, millions tuned in to see how the show continues to innovate. The inclusion of robots dancing alongside human performers subtly reinforced China’s commitment to embracing both technological advancement and traditional values.

The timing of the Gala’s performance also coincided with the unveiling of DeepSeek, a new Chinese AI program that stunned global audiences by making significant strides in artificial intelligence, prompting discussion across Western media. On social media platforms, some commentators pointed out the symbolic importance of the performance, drawing parallels between China’s rapid technological progress and the robots’ fluid, energetic dance.
