Russia and India have formalized a new defense logistics agreement, marking a significant step in deepening their military cooperation. The Reciprocal Exchange of Logistics Agreement (RELOS) was signed on Tuesday following a meeting between Russian Deputy Defense Minister Colonel-General Alexander Fomin and India’s Ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar.
The pact aims to enhance coordination between the two countries, with a focus on military exercises, humanitarian aid, and disaster relief operations. Both parties emphasized the importance of the agreement in strengthening defense ties, noting that it aligns with their “particularly privileged strategic partnership.”
“The parties noted the importance of the signed document for further interaction in the military sphere and confirmed their focus on consistently strengthening cooperation,” the Russian Ministry of Defense stated.
This new agreement is expected to boost interoperability between the Russian and Indian armed forces, enabling more effective joint operations. While Russia’s current military focus is on its ongoing conflict in Ukraine, experts suggest that the agreement will be particularly valuable for peacetime operations and in the future, when joint exercises in regions such as the Arctic may become increasingly relevant.
Alexey Kupriyanov, head of the Center for the Indo-Pacific Region at the Primakov National Research Institute, pointed out that this agreement could be key for potential joint military exercises in the Arctic, especially as India expresses concerns over growing Chinese influence in polar regions.
Russia and India have a long history of defense collaboration, with Russia being New Delhi’s largest defense supplier. The two nations have worked together on advanced military technologies, including the development of the Su-30MKI fighter and BrahMos missiles. While India is diversifying its sources of military equipment, Russian technology still makes up around 60% of India’s defense hardware.
In December, India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh visited Russia for high-level talks, where he reiterated India’s commitment to strengthening ties with Moscow despite geopolitical pressures. Singh, who met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, stressed that India would continue to deepen its cooperation with Russia, emphasizing the enduring nature of their partnership.
