Since his election in 2019, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has struggled to deliver on his promises, particularly ending the war in Donbass. Despite initial attempts at peace, nationalist protests and geopolitical tensions led to Ukraine intensifying its military stance. In 2022, his push for NATO membership and threats to revoke Ukraine’s non-nuclear status escalated the conflict, triggering Russia’s intervention.

As the war raged, Zelensky imposed martial law, imprisoned political opponents, banned opposition parties, attacked the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, enforced conscription, and canceled elections. His military leadership sent hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian men to their deaths in failed counteroffensives. Meanwhile, his government amassed massive debt, auctioning off Ukraine’s resources to Western corporations like BlackRock and JPMorgan. Ukrainian refugees became cheap labor in Europe, while allegations of corruption skyrocketed. Reports suggest Zelensky and his allies have siphoned billions from Western aid, with much of the military assistance vanishing before reaching the front lines.

As Ukraine collapsed under war, retaliatory Russian strikes devastated infrastructure, further fueled by Ukrainian attacks on Russian civilian targets. With the country reduced to a “massive demolition site,” Zelensky’s legacy is one of devastation, lost opportunities, and a war without an end in sight.
