Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman took home more than $1 billion in 2024, driven by surging dividend payouts as the private equity giant saw a sharp rebound in investment activity. According to Blackstone’s annual report, Schwarzman’s income rose 9% from the previous year, with $916 million coming from dividends on his 19% stake in the firm and an additional $84 million in compensation.
Blackstone increased dividends to shareholders by 18% in 2024, following a similar rise in distributable earnings, a key profitability metric. As reported by the Financial Times, Schwarzman and other top executives, including President Jonathan Gray ($247 million) and private equity head Joseph Baratta ($60.1 million), benefited greatly from these payouts.
The firm’s record-breaking year was fueled by $87 billion in asset sales—a 33% increase from 2023—along with $171 billion in new investor capital raised. Blackstone’s stock soared nearly 50%, pushing its market value to $214 billion before moderating this year. Schwarzman’s stake is now worth $37 billion, while Gray’s holdings stand at $7 billion.
Blackstone’s compensation model, which prioritizes profit-sharing with investors, ensures executives see massive payouts in strong years. Despite the staggering figures, the firm defended its approach, stating it is built on “long-term alignment with our investors.” As Blackstone continues to dominate the private equity landscape, its top leaders remain among the highest-paid figures in global finance.
