U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 200% retaliatory tariff on alcohol imports from the European Union unless the bloc removes its tariff on American whiskey. The announcement, made on his Truth Social platform, marks the latest escalation in the ongoing trade dispute between the U.S. and the EU.

Trump’s warning comes in response to the EU’s decision to levy a 50% duty on American whiskey imports, a move he described as “nasty.” In his statement, Trump declared that if the tariff is not lifted immediately, the U.S. will implement steep duties on wines, champagnes, and other alcoholic beverages from France and EU-member countries.

“If this Tariff is not removed immediately, the U.S. will shortly place a 200% Tariff on all WINES, CHAMPAGNES, & ALCOHOLIC PRODUCTS COMING OUT OF FRANCE AND OTHER E.U. REPRESENTED COUNTRIES. This will be great for the Wine and Champagne businesses in the U.S.,” Trump wrote.
