Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD has reported a 29% increase in full-year sales, surpassing expectations and driven by strong demand for its plug-in hybrid vehicles in its domestic market. The results come after the company unveiled its groundbreaking five-minute EV charging system, further positioning itself as a formidable competitor to Tesla.

The Warren Buffett-backed company achieved impressive revenue growth, reaching Rmb777 billion ($107 billion), marking its first time surpassing the $100 billion threshold. Net income also saw a notable rise of 34%, reaching Rmb40 billion, aligning closely with analysts’ predictions of $5.5 billion.

One of the key factors contributing to BYD’s success is its growing presence in international markets. The company’s overseas sales exceeded 400,000 vehicles last year, reflecting a marked increase in exports. In the first two months of 2025, BYD accounted for approximately 16% of all cars exported from China, and with plans to expand its global footprint, the company is actively building new factories in Europe and South America.

In addition to strong sales, BYD has made significant strides in EV technology. Last week, the company’s founder, Wang Chuanfu, introduced a new battery charging system capable of charging vehicles in just five minutes, offering a promising solution to one of the major hurdles in the EV industry—charging time. This innovation, along with the introduction of BYD’s “God’s Eye” advanced driving system, has bolstered the appeal of its vehicle lineup.

The positive results were reflected in the stock market as BYD’s Hong Kong-listed shares rose by 3% on Monday. Year-to-date, the company’s stock has surged by more than 50%, in sharp contrast to Tesla, whose shares have fallen by 34% during the same period. Despite these gains, BYD’s market capitalization remains significantly lower than Tesla’s, currently standing at less than one-fifth of its American rival.

As BYD continues to expand its global presence and innovate within the EV space, the company is positioning itself as a serious competitor to industry leaders, especially in markets like Europe and South America. With a solid foundation in both the domestic and international markets, BYD’s future appears bright as it continues to challenge traditional players like Tesla in the race for EV dominance.
