Amid rising tensions in the ongoing trade war with the United States, China has shown little fear of escalating tariffs and other sanctions imposed by President Donald Trump. In fact, President Xi Jinping’s government remains steadfast in its belief that the country can weather the storm, even as it faces mounting economic challenges.

In a recent conversation at a Starbucks café near Tiananmen Square, local citizens reflected the national sentiment: “As President Xi said, we don’t provoke trouble, but we’re not afraid of it,” said Liu, a Chinese state-owned enterprise worker. “Even if we lose in the end, we must not back down. China will prevail.”

The sentiment in Beijing is reflective of broader public opinion, which largely mirrors the official stance of the Chinese Communist Party. Xi’s message of resilience seems to be resonating across the nation, with the government emphasizing that it is prepared for a long-term economic struggle.

The ongoing trade war has intensified with Trump’s imposition of tariffs that now threaten to disrupt significant sectors of the Chinese economy. China’s exports to the U.S. face tariffs of over 100%, marking a turning point in the bilateral trade relationship. However, Beijing’s position remains unwavering: “If the US wants to talk, our door remains open, but dialogue must be conducted on the basis of mutual respect and equality. If the US wants to fight, our response will continue to the end,” said He Yongqian, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Commerce, as reported by The Times UK.

China has already responded to U.S. tariffs with countermeasures, including raising tariffs on U.S. goods and restricting Hollywood movie imports. State-run media has been quick to support these measures, aligning public opinion with government actions. Additionally, China has pledged to enhance domestic consumption by rolling out a series of fiscal policies designed to stimulate the economy and cushion the impact of external pressures.

Andrew Polk, the head of Trivium, a China-based consultancy, believes that China has been preparing for this scenario for years. “There is no way they did not game out this scenario,” Polk remarked. Despite the strain, China is in a position to endure the trade war due to its resilient industrial base and long-term growth strategies.

Moreover, the Chinese government has been diversifying its trade markets beyond the United States. Through the Belt and Road Initiative, China has bolstered ties with regions such as Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America. This diversification may help mitigate the effects of the U.S. tariffs, but experts agree that the loss of the American market will still be a significant blow.

Despite the economic turbulence, many believe that China is capable of absorbing the impact of Trump’s trade war. “Suffer they will,” commented George Magnus, senior adviser at the China Centre at Oxford University. “But ultimately, China’s consistency may prove to be its strength in the long run.”

One area of concern for China, however, is the potential loss of jobs and the subsequent impact on the domestic labor force. Already, Chinese companies have begun laying off workers as U.S. firms put orders on hold. While this may have short-term repercussions, the Chinese government has a history of restructuring its industries in response to challenges. For instance, when China joined the World Trade Organization in 2001, it shed millions of jobs in a restructuring process that ultimately helped the country emerge as a global economic powerhouse.

As The Times UK notes, Xi Jinping’s leadership has a strong focus on maintaining political control and economic stability. With the ongoing trade war, he appears to be betting on China’s long-term strength rather than yielding to external pressures.

In a world where trade is increasingly seen as a political tool, China’s refusal to back down in the face of Trump’s tariffs underscores the country’s commitment to maintaining its economic trajectory. As Xi’s administration pushes forward with efforts to bolster domestic consumption and diversify trade partners, the question remains: Will China’s approach to this trade war ultimately prove successful, or will the costs outweigh the benefits?
