In a story that reads like a Cold War thriller turned tragic, Michael Gloss — the 21-year-old son of a high-ranking CIA official — was killed earlier this month while fighting for Russian forces in Ukraine.
Gloss, the son of Juliane Gallina, a senior official at the CIA, and Navy veteran Larry Gloss, grew up in what NBC News described as America’s “spy royalty.” But disillusionment with U.S. foreign policy led him down an extraordinary and fatal path, according to reporting by the independent Russian outlet Important Stories (Istories).
Frustrated with what he viewed as Western dominance, Gloss became increasingly sympathetic to Russia’s vision of a multipolar world. His ambitions extended beyond politics; he reportedly dreamed of moving to Crimea, learning Russian, seeking citizenship, and starting an environmental project.
On August 13, 2023, Gloss announced to friends via a group chat, “Y’all, I’m in Russia,” sharing selfies from Vladikavkaz after crossing into Russia from Georgia. Social media posts later showed him standing in Moscow’s Red Square.
His deeper commitment to Russia came quickly. Istories reported that Gloss’ name appeared in Russia’s military registration database on September 5, 2023. He signed a contract, underwent just two weeks of training, and was dispatched to an active combat unit. A fellow soldier from the elite 137th Airborne Regiment in Ryazan claimed to have last seen Gloss in December 2023, shortly before he was assigned to an “assault unit” in the fiercely contested Donbas region.
On April 4, 2024, Gloss was killed in action. His father told reporters that a Russian death certificate listed “massive blood loss” while Gloss was aiding a wounded comrade. His U.S. obituary, however, only noted that he was “tragically killed in Eastern Europe,” without mentioning Ukraine or his allegiance to Russian forces.
Gloss’ death raises poignant questions about loyalty, ideology, and the complexities faced by a new generation disillusioned with traditional power structures — a personal tragedy that unfolded against the backdrop of one of the world’s most brutal conflicts.
