Chinese Scientists Develop Night-Vision Contact Lenses That Work With Eyes Closed

In a breakthrough that blurs the line between science fiction and reality, Chinese researchers have developed contact lenses that allow users to see in the dark—even with their eyes shut. As reported by The Times UK, the innovation uses embedded nanoparticles to convert normally invisible infrared light into visible wavelengths, enabling what scientists describe as the potential for “super-vision.”

Unlike traditional night-vision goggles that are bulky and require battery power, these lenses are made from a flexible, transparent polymer already used in conventional contact lenses. The nanoparticles within the lenses absorb near-infrared light and re-emit it in red, green, and blue—colors the human eye can detect.

“Our research opens up the potential for non-invasive wearable devices to give people super-vision,” said Professor Tian Xue of the University of Science and Technology of China. The findings were detailed in the scientific journal Cell.

Initial tests showed the lenses could detect weak infrared signals, such as those emitted by LED lights. However, due to the close proximity to the retina, image clarity remains a challenge. To address this, the research team has also created glasses using the same technology to offer a sharper view.

Remarkably, the lenses performed even more effectively when the user’s eyes were closed. According to Professor Xue, this is because near-infrared light penetrates the eyelid more efficiently than visible light, reducing visual noise and enhancing the ability to perceive flickering infrared signals.

In early animal tests, mice wearing the lenses showed clear behavioral responses to infrared light. In human trials, users could detect the direction of flashing infrared signals and differentiate between multiple wavelengths based on color.

Beyond night vision, the team believes the lenses could prove useful in foggy or dusty environments, where infrared light travels more effectively than visible light. They are also exploring applications for color-blind individuals by converting hard-to-detect hues into more visible colors.

“We hope to develop a contact lens with more precise spatial resolution and higher sensitivity,” said Xue, noting that ongoing collaboration with material scientists and optical experts will be key to advancing the technology.
