Nvidia Becomes World’s First $4 Trillion Public Company

Milestone underscores Wall Street’s faith in AI revolution and chipmaker’s dominant role

Nvidia has become the first publicly listed company to reach a market capitalization of $4 trillion, reflecting the rapid acceleration of the artificial intelligence (AI) boom that the company has helped to ignite.

As reported by The Times UK, Nvidia’s shares rose as much as 2.4% on Wednesday, pushing the Santa Clara-based chipmaker past the historic milestone. The company’s stock, now trading at around $164, has more than tripled in value over the past year — a meteoric rise unmatched by even tech titans like Apple and Microsoft.

Founded in 1993 by Jensen Huang and two co-founders, Nvidia reached a $1 trillion valuation only in June 2023. The fact that it has quadrupled its market cap in just over a year is being hailed as a defining moment in the age of AI, with analysts pointing to a new phase of growth driven by insatiable demand for high-performance chips.

“This is a historic moment for Nvidia and speaks to the AI revolution hitting its next stage of growth,” said Dan Ives, tech analyst at Wedbush Securities. “We believe Microsoft will also hit the $4 trillion market cap club this summer — and then over the next 18 months, the focus will be on the $5 trillion club.”

Nvidia’s GPUs (graphics processing units) are at the heart of the AI transformation, powering everything from machine learning and data centers to autonomous vehicles and generative AI platforms like ChatGPT. As rivals struggle to match the performance and efficiency of Nvidia’s chips, the company has firmly established itself as the backbone of the AI infrastructure.

The company reported an astonishing $44.1 billion in revenue in Q1 of this year — up 69% from the same period last year — and forecasts Q2 revenue of $45 billion. Nvidia’s share price has surged nearly 74% since April, recovering from dips linked to geopolitical tensions and trade policy uncertainty during the Trump-era tariffs.

Its rise has had broader market implications. Nvidia now holds a 7.3% weighting on the S&P 500, the highest of any company, surpassing both Apple and Microsoft. Its valuation now exceeds the combined worth of all companies listed on the UK stock exchange and is larger than the total stock market value of either Canada or Mexico.

Microsoft, currently the second-largest U.S. company, stands at a $3.75 trillion valuation, while Apple hovers slightly below $3.7 trillion.

As investors continue to pour into AI-related assets, Nvidia’s remarkable ascent underscores both the promise and dominance of the technologies shaping the 21st century. With the company setting new records seemingly by the quarter, the trillion-dollar question now is: who will be next to join the $4 trillion — and eventually $5 trillion — club?
