The Maldives moved a step closer today to embedding its small and medium enterprises into the global digital economy, with more than 450 entrepreneurs and business stakeholders joining a webinar organized jointly by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade and Alibaba.com.
The full-day programme, held at the Barcelo Nasandhura Malé and broadcast online for nationwide participation, introduced Maldivian participants to the process of establishing seller accounts on Alibaba.com. Led by specialists from the Chinese e-commerce giant, the event marked the first time Maldivian businesses have been formally guided to access one of the world’s largest online trading platforms, which connects buyers and sellers in nearly 200 countries.
Marking a New Phase in Digital Trade
Opening the event, Economic Development Minister Mohamed Saeed described the initiative as “a defining moment” for the nation’s digital economy. He emphasized that the high level of participation—representing not only entrepreneurs but also start-ups, online service providers, freight companies, postal operators, and logistics firms—reflects the eagerness across the Maldivian economy to explore e-commerce.
“This collaboration with Alibaba paves the way for Maldivian goods and services to gain exposure in a truly global marketplace,” Saeed said. “It goes beyond simply learning how to open an account; today’s training is about preparing our businesses with the know-how to compete and grow internationally.”
State Minister Abdulla Siyaz highlighted similar points, noting that Alibaba’s engagement provides local SMEs with “a rare opportunity to connect directly with global consumers and move past the geographic constraints that have historically limited market access.”
Diversification at the Core of Policy
The initiative is part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s wider economic agenda to expand opportunities in digital trade and diversify beyond the country’s traditional reliance on tourism and fisheries. Officials have underscored that improving online visibility for Maldivian products is central to this strategy.
By enabling SMEs to showcase their offerings on major e-commerce platforms, the government aims to broaden export opportunities, boost foreign revenue, and generate employment in emerging sectors.
“Even the smallest enterprises in our islands now have the chance to reach distant buyers,” Minister Saeed observed. “From handmade crafts and food products to innovative services, the potential is vast.”
Strengthened Through Bilateral Cooperation
The partnership with Alibaba.com also reflects growing economic cooperation between the Maldives and China. The initiative follows discussions linked to the China-Maldives Free Trade Agreement and enjoys strong support from the Chinese government.
The Embassy of China in the Maldives welcomed the launch, noting that it illustrates the “tangible results of bilateral collaboration” and represents a shared commitment to enabling Maldivian entrepreneurs to benefit from global e-commerce opportunities.
By connecting local producers with Alibaba.com, the project enhances commercial linkages and underlines the strategic role of digital trade in deepening bilateral relations.
Training Designed for Practical Impact
During today’s sessions, Alibaba trainers guided participants step-by-step through the process of setting up and managing accounts, listing products effectively, and establishing trust with international buyers. Modules also covered digital marketing strategies, product compliance standards, and integrating logistics solutions—skills that participants could immediately begin applying to their businesses.
Entrepreneurs who attended described the programme as a timely intervention to overcome long-standing challenges such as high transport costs, remoteness from global markets, and limited access to trading networks. Officials confirmed that the training is only the beginning, with follow-up workshops, mentorship schemes, and technical support planned to ensure sustainable participation in online trade.
Alibaba’s Role in Enabling SMEs
Founded in 1999, Alibaba.com was the first business platform launched by the Alibaba Group and has since developed into one of the most influential wholesale e-commerce marketplaces in the world. It currently connects millions of enterprises across more than 190 countries, helping small businesses reduce barriers to global trade.
The Alibaba Group today also operates Taobao, Tmall, and AliExpress, alongside expanding ventures in cloud services, logistics, and digital finance. Its core mission—“to make it easy to do business anywhere”—aligns directly with the Maldives’ efforts to extend market access for its entrepreneurs.
With today’s launch, Maldivian entrepreneurs are better positioned to showcase their products internationally and compete in global supply chains. The strong level of participation underscores both the interest within the private sector and the government’s determination to open new trade channels.
For the Maldives, the partnership with Alibaba is more than a single event—it is a stepping stone toward embedding local businesses into the global digital marketplace and ensuring that Maldivian innovation and craftsmanship can be discovered by customers across the world.
