Nvidia Corp. announced Monday that it plans to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI, aiming to build new data centers and infrastructure to support the growing demand for artificial intelligence workloads. The investment comes as both companies accelerate efforts to scale AI models and computing capacity amid surging global interest in generative AI.

The two firms signed a letter of intent for a strategic partnership, with Nvidia committing resources for the deployment of advanced AI systems, including data center hardware and power capacity. According to the statement, Nvidia will retrain its systems and co-optimize them with OpenAI’s infrastructure to meet the technical demands of future AI models.

This investment marks a significant deepening of Nvidia’s relationship with OpenAI. The chipmaker already provides cloud services for OpenAI’s compute needs, and this deal further integrates the companies’ operations, allowing Nvidia to play a key role in shaping the performance and scale of OpenAI’s AI platforms.

Nvidia has seen substantial revenue growth from its data center and AI hardware business, reporting $46.7 billion in revenue for its second quarter of fiscal 2026, up 56% year-over-year. The company’s “Blackwell” AI data center products contributed to this surge, reflecting strong demand for high-performance computing systems critical for AI model training.

For OpenAI, the funding addresses one of the primary bottlenecks in developing large-scale AI models: access to sufficient compute power. The $100 billion commitment is expected to support infrastructure capable of handling next-generation AI workloads, including the training and deployment of increasingly sophisticated language models.

The deal also underscores Nvidia’s strategic positioning in the AI ecosystem. By investing directly in OpenAI, Nvidia strengthens its influence over AI infrastructure and ensures its hardware remains central to the deployment of cutting-edge AI systems. Analysts note that this move could further solidify Nvidia’s dominance in the AI hardware market, even as competitors and cloud providers expand their own AI offerings.

The partnership comes amid rising global competition in AI, with companies racing to secure computational resources, manage energy requirements, and scale data center operations efficiently. Nvidia’s investment is expected to accelerate OpenAI’s growth while anchoring Nvidia as a critical infrastructure partner in the fast-evolving AI industry.
