President Donald Trump delivered a blistering critique of the United Nations on Tuesday, accusing the global body of failing to address wars, migration, and humanitarian crises — and questioning whether it serves any purpose at all.
Speaking before leaders from nearly 150 nations at U.N. headquarters in New York, Trump claimed he personally resolved seven international conflicts without assistance from the organization.
“It’s too bad I had to do these things instead of the United Nations doing them and, sadly, in all cases, the United Nations didn’t even try to help,” Trump said. “That being the case, what is the purpose of the United Nations?”
He mocked the institution as ineffective, quipping that “all they do is write a really strongly worded letter.” Trump added that while he was working to end wars, he never received so much as a phone call from the U.N. offering support.
The former president also turned his fire on U.N. migration policies, accusing the organization of making the crisis worse rather than helping manage it.
“Not only is the U.N. not solving problems it should, too often, it’s actually creating new problems for us to solve,” Trump said. He singled out what he called “the crisis of uncontrolled migration,” describing it as “the number one political issue of our time.”
According to Trump, the U.N. spent $372 million to aid more than 600,000 migrants entering the United States — providing them with food, shelter, transportation, and even debit cards. “The U.N. is supporting people that are illegally coming into the United States, and we have to get them out,” he declared.
Adding a lighter note to his remarks, Trump recounted two technical mishaps during his arrival: an escalator breakdown as he and former First Lady Melania Trump rode to the General Assembly hall, and a malfunctioning teleprompter. “These are the two things I got from the United Nations,” he joked, “a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter.”
