Meta Strikes Three Major Solar Deals to Power AI Expansion

Meta’s latest renewable investments highlight the growing urgency within the tech sector to secure clean energy as AI-driven data processing dramatically increases electricity demand.

Meta has signed three new agreements to secure nearly one gigawatt of solar power, accelerating its push to meet the massive energy demands of its growing artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The deals, announced this week, bring Meta’s total solar power purchases in 2025 to more than 3 gigawatts — a significant milestone that underscores how tech giants are increasingly turning to renewables to power their expanding fleets of data centers.

Solar energy has become a favorite among major technology firms for its relatively low cost, scalability, and rapid construction timelines. Meta’s latest investments are spread across Louisiana and Texas, with completion expected over the next two years.

The company unveiled two agreements in Louisiana on Thursday that involve purchasing the environmental attributes of 385 megawatts of electricity. Both projects are slated to be operational by 2027. Earlier in the week, Meta announced an even larger deal — a 600-megawatt purchase from a massive solar farm near Lubbock, Texas, also set to begin commercial operations in 2027.

While the Texas solar project won’t directly power Meta’s data centers, it will feed electricity into the regional grid to offset the company’s overall consumption. The Louisiana projects, however, center around environmental attribute certificates (EACs), which allow Meta to balance out emissions from carbon-intensive sources.

EACs, also known as renewable energy certificates, have faced scrutiny from environmental analysts who argue that they can mask the true carbon footprint of companies whose actual operations continue to rely heavily on traditional power sources.

With competitors such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Google also expanding their renewable portfolios, the race to power AI sustainably has become one of the defining challenges of the industry’s next phase.
