Chaos Industries, a Los Angeles-based manufacturer of counter-drone radar systems, has raised $510 million in a Series D funding round, CEO John Tenet told Reuters, marking another milestone in the surging interest in defense technology firms. The latest investment, led by Valor Equity Partners, values the company at $4.5 billion and comes just six months after its previous funding round, bringing total capital raised by the startup to $1 billion. Tenet said the funds will be used to expand manufacturing capabilities and scale the workforce to meet growing demand.
Founded in 2022, Chaos Industries has quickly become a prominent player in the emerging military tech sector, which has attracted nearly $30 billion in investor funding this year, according to Pitchbook. Its radar systems, capable of detecting drones and small unmanned aerial vehicles from hundreds of kilometers away, address a critical vulnerability underscored by Russia’s war in Ukraine. Legacy defense systems often focus only on larger aircraft, giving Chaos a strategic edge in modern battlefield detection.
The Series D round brings high-profile backing, with Valor Equity Partners CEO Antonio Gracias, a longtime associate of Elon Musk and former advisor to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), joining Chaos’ board. Valor has previously invested in prominent defense and aerospace companies, including Anduril and SpaceX. “We look forward to supporting them,” Gracias told Reuters, without providing further comment.
The rapid ascent of Chaos mirrors the broader defense tech boom, which has produced multi-billion-dollar startups such as Anduril, Shield AI, and Saronic. While many of these companies lack immediate paths to profitability, investors are betting on their role in modernizing military capabilities amid rising geopolitical tensions with China and evolving threats on the battlefield. Chaos has already secured a $2 million contract with the U.S. Air Force and expects to announce several additional contracts in the coming months, Tenet said, though he declined to provide specifics.
With governments worldwide prioritizing defenses against drone incursions, including incidents near airports and in conflict zones, Chaos Industries’ advanced radar technology positions it at the forefront of a fast-growing market. The company’s ability to detect drones at long distances is a core selling point, reinforcing investor confidence in the strategic value of emerging military technology.
