Yoshua Bengio, one of the most influential figures in artificial intelligence, has become the first person to have their academic work cited more than one million times on Google Scholar, marking a historic milestone in modern science. Bengio, a computer scientist at the University of Montreal, is widely regarded as one of the “godfathers of AI,” alongside Geoffrey Hinton of the University of Toronto and Yann LeCun of Meta in New York City. The trio shared the 2019 A.M. Turing Award — the highest honor in computer science — for their groundbreaking research on neural networks.
Bengio’s work has shaped the foundation of today’s machine learning systems. His most-cited paper, Generative Adversarial Nets (2014), co-authored with Ian Goodfellow and others, has been referenced more than 105,000 times. He also co-wrote a Nature review paper with Hinton and LeCun, and contributed to key studies on the “attention” mechanism — a concept that revolutionized how computers process language and ultimately paved the way for chatbots such as ChatGPT.
The scale of Bengio’s influence underscores the rise of artificial intelligence as a dominant scientific field. Kaiming He, a computer scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and co-author of the most-cited paper of the twenty-first century, described the milestone as “remarkable,” noting that eight of the top ten most-cited papers this century are related to machine learning. “AI is changing the world, and we’re just seeing the tip of the iceberg,” Bengio told Nature, reflecting on the extraordinary growth of the discipline.
Experts say Bengio’s citation record highlights both the global reach of AI research and the growing prominence of open-access academic platforms. Alberto Martín Martín, an information scientist at the University of Granada, called Bengio’s achievement “outstanding” but cautioned that citation counts can be misleading and easily misused for marketing purposes. He added that while Google Scholar reports higher citation totals than other databases such as Web of Science or Scopus, the broader accessibility of such platforms has transformed how research is shared and discovered.
Bengio himself remains modest about the milestone, emphasizing that citations should not be a goal in themselves. “It should not become an objective for researchers to have more citations, because it leads into trying to optimize this rather than do good science and go after the truth,” he said. As an avid user of Google Scholar, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, Bengio credits the platform with revolutionizing academic research. “It makes it so much easier to do things that would otherwise take painstaking efforts,” he added.
Bengio’s unprecedented achievement not only cements his place among the most influential scientists of the modern era but also reflects the rapid evolution of AI from a niche academic pursuit to a driving force in global innovation.
