Daily Mail owner DMGT announced on Saturday that it has reached a £500 million ($650 million) agreement to acquire The Telegraph, a transaction that would unite two of Britain’s major right-leaning newspapers under a single media group. The move follows the withdrawal of U.S.-based private investment firm RedBird Capital Partners from its bid for The Telegraph, reportedly due to resistance from senior figures within the newspaper’s newsroom.
Sources close to the talks said the purchase price is roughly equal to the funds spent by the RedBird-backed consortium. DMGT and RedBird IMI have entered a period of exclusivity to finalize the transaction and prepare regulatory submissions, which are expected to proceed swiftly. A spokesman for RedBird IMI confirmed the coordination, saying the agreement will soon be submitted to the Secretary of State for approval.
The Telegraph has not issued an immediate comment on the acquisition. Analysts say the deal would significantly consolidate right-leaning media influence in the U.K., creating a powerful entity capable of shaping public discourse and political narratives.
The agreement highlights the growing consolidation within the media sector, as legacy newspapers face rising financial pressures and shifting readership habits, driving major mergers and acquisitions across the industry.
