China Simulates Large-Scale Operation to Block Elon Musk’s Starlink in a Taiwan Conflict

Military-linked researchers say disabling the satellite network is feasible but requires up to 2,000 jamming drones

Chinese military‑linked researchers have conducted detailed simulations exploring how to disable Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite communications system during a potential conflict over Taiwan, according to newly published scientific papers. As reported by Times UK, the studies reflect Beijing’s efforts to learn extensively from Russia’s war in Ukraine, where Ukrainian forces have relied heavily on Starlink for battlefield communications.

The research, published in the Journal of Systems Engineering and Electronics, concluded that blocking Starlink signals over Taiwan was technically achievable. However, it would require an enormous mobilisation of between 1,000 and 2,000 jamming drones, making the operation one of the most ambitious electronic warfare missions ever contemplated by China’s defence establishment.

The studies provide rare insight into how broadly the Chinese state — including the People’s Liberation Army and elite defence universities known as the “seven sons of national defence” — is preparing for Taiwan‑related war scenarios. The latest work was led by scientists from the Beijing Institute of Technology and Zhejiang University, building on earlier studies from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Researchers examined both “hunting” Starlink satellites in orbit using Chinese spacecraft and intercepting their signals closer to Earth with drone‑mounted jammers. The urgency stems from Starlink’s design: a constantly shifting constellation of nearly 9,000 small satellites, which proved highly resistant to Russian jamming attempts in Ukraine after SpaceX pushed remote software updates to bypass interference.

The second study proposed countering Starlink with a similarly flexible network of small jammers deployed by drones, balloons, or aircraft. Each jammer could disrupt communications across roughly 39 square kilometres. Given Taiwan’s 36,000‑square‑kilometre territory — nearly 1,000 times that footprint — even 1,000 jammers may be insufficient, especially in mountainous regions that require denser coverage.

Analysts say the research underscores China’s determination to address the strategic challenge posed by Musk’s private-sector capabilities, which have added an unexpected dimension to modern warfare. Despite CIA assessments that President Xi Jinping has instructed his military to be ready for an invasion by 2027, most experts agree he is unlikely to launch an unprovoked attack soon. Nonetheless, Beijing’s planning continues to expand, influenced by conflicts from Ukraine to the South China Sea.
