Giant Cosmic ‘Teacup’ Discovered: Scientists Find Biggest-Spinning Structure

Scientists have detected the largest-known spinning structure ever observed in the universe — a colossal filament of galaxies, gas and dark matter twisting through space like a cosmic carousel. The team, using South Africa’s powerful MeerKAT radio telescope array, identified the filament about 140 million light-years from Earth, revealing a thread-like structure so vast it dwarfs the Milky Way.

The rotating filament measures roughly 50 million light-years in length and 117,000 light-years across, populated by nearly 300 galaxies. This immense strand represents one of the building blocks of the cosmic web, the universe’s vast network of clusters, voids and filaments formed by ordinary matter, gas and the elusive dark matter that makes up 27% of the cosmos. By comparison, the Milky Way — itself part of a filament — spans a mere 100,000 light-years in diameter, making the newfound structure almost unfathomably large.

Astrophysicists determined the filament was spinning by observing galaxies on opposite sides moving in opposing directions, with a rotational speed of about 246,000 miles per hour. This motion marks the largest individual spinning object ever detected. Scientists believe more such rotating giants exist, but current telescopes lack the resolution to uncover them. The discovery, detailed in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, helps validate models of the cosmic web and hints that rotation is a more fundamental feature of large-scale cosmic structures than previously understood.

Researchers compared the phenomenon to a teacup ride at an amusement park. Each galaxy spins on its own axis like a teacup, while the entire filament collectively rotates like the spinning platform beneath them. The finding highlights a dual-motion system rarely observed on such enormous scales. Filaments sit at the top of the cosmic hierarchy, far larger than galaxies or clusters, making this discovery a major milestone in understanding how matter behaves across the universe’s grandest structures.

The team says technological advances in radio and optical astronomy are rapidly accelerating discoveries like this one, opening a new window on the behavior of dark matter, galaxy evolution and the shape of the universe itself. With more powerful surveys underway, scientists expect additional spinning structures to emerge, each one offering deeper clues into the cosmic web that binds the universe together.
