Nvidia has completed its previously announced purchase of Intel shares worth $5 billion, finalizing a deal first revealed in September, according to a regulatory filing cited by Reuters. The transaction marks a significant investment by the world’s most valuable semiconductor company into a longtime industry rival that has struggled with costly expansion plans and strategic missteps.
The leading artificial intelligence chip designer agreed in September to buy Intel common stock at $23.28 per share, a move widely seen as providing a financial lifeline to the U.S. chipmaker. Years of capital-intensive investments in manufacturing capacity have strained Intel’s finances, making Nvidia’s backing symbolically and financially important.
According to the filing released on Monday, Nvidia acquired more than 214.7 million Intel shares through a private placement at the agreed price. Reuters reported that U.S. antitrust regulators had already cleared the investment, with the Federal Trade Commission posting notice of its approval earlier this month.
Market reaction was muted following confirmation of the transaction. Nvidia shares were down about 1.3% in premarket trading, while Intel’s stock showed little change, reflecting investor caution despite the scale of the deal.
