Cursive Strikes Back in the Digital Classroom

As screens dominate learning, scientists and educators are rethinking handwriting’s role in how children’s brains develop

For years, cursive handwriting seemed destined for obscurity, a looping relic of a pre-digital age. Across classrooms in the United States, Finland and Switzerland, the flowing script of connected letters quietly disappeared from curricula, replaced by keyboards, tablets and touchscreens. Now, the pendulum is swinging back. New Jersey has become the latest US state to mandate cursive instruction, requiring schools to teach it to children aged roughly 8 to 11. The move places it among about two dozen states that have reintroduced penmanship over the past decade, signalling a broader reassessment of what is lost when handwriting fades from education.

When former New Jersey governor Phil Murphy signed the bill during his final days in office, he framed cursive not as nostalgia, but as neuroscience. Learning to write by hand, he argued, could offer cognitive benefits to students growing up immersed in digital tools. That claim is gaining traction, bolstered by a growing body of research examined recently by Nature, which suggests that handwriting — though not necessarily cursive alone — plays a distinctive role in how the brain learns.

The scientific consensus is clear on one point: handwriting engages the brain in ways that typing does not. Writing by hand is slower, more effortful and demands fine motor coordination, forcing the brain to integrate perception, movement and memory. What remains contested is whether cursive, specifically, offers advantages over print handwriting, in which letters are formed separately. The evidence is mixed, but the broader implications of abandoning handwriting altogether are becoming harder to ignore.

In the United States, cursive largely vanished from required schooling around 2010, leaving a generation of students unable to read or write it fluently. Karin Harman James, a developmental neuroscientist at Indiana University Bloomington, says this gap is now commonplace. Many of her university students cannot write in cursive at all. James has been studying handwriting for more than two decades, focusing on how developing fine motor skills shapes learning in children.

In one influential study, James and her colleagues taught pre-literate children either to write letters by hand or to type them on a keyboard. When the children later viewed those letters while undergoing brain scans, a striking difference emerged. Those who had practised handwriting showed activation in brain regions associated with reading in adults. Children who had only typed the letters did not. The findings suggested that the physical act of writing helps wire the brain for recognizing symbols, reinforcing the connection between visual form and meaning.

“This isn’t too unexpected,” James says, “because we know that fine motor skills in children are very important for development across many tasks.” Handwriting appears to help children internalize letters and numbers, strengthening their ability to identify and remember them. It is not simply a method of recording information, but part of the learning process itself.

Similar conclusions have emerged from studies in Europe. Audrey van der Meer, a neuroscientist at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, has compared children’s brain activity during handwriting and typing by measuring electrical signals across the scalp. When children wrote by hand, activity clustered near regions involved in learning and memory. During typing, those regions were far less engaged. Writing, she explains, requires complex motor patterns; typing relies on repetitive, simplified finger movements.

Van der Meer worries that some education systems have moved too far, too fast, towards digital-first learning. In Norway, she says, some schools give children tablets on their first day, using screens to teach reading and writing. The result, according to teachers, is that students arrive in later grades with little ability to hold a pencil properly. Van der Meer and her colleagues are now urging the Norwegian government to reinstate handwriting requirements, arguing that the brain follows a simple rule: use it or lose it.

Where cursive fits into this picture is less certain. Virginia Berninger, an education researcher and clinical psychologist who studied handwriting for nearly 30 years at the University of Washington, found that different styles may be beneficial at different stages. Her work suggests that print handwriting, also known as manuscript writing, is better suited to early learning. Children’s books and reading materials are almost universally printed, so teaching print first aligns writing with what children see.

Later, however, cursive may offer its own advantages. Berninger’s research found that by around grade 4, children who wrote in cursive showed improvements in spelling and speed of composition compared with those using print. The continuous flow of cursive, she suggests, may reduce cognitive load, allowing children to focus more on ideas than on letter formation.

Not all studies agree. Research from Canada found that children taught only one style — whether cursive or print — in early grades performed better in spelling than those who switched styles. In that study, the cursive-only group also showed gains in syntax and word production. Other researchers, including James, caution that cursive is a difficult skill to master and that clear evidence of its superiority remains limited.

Still, many scientists argue that the debate over cursive risks missing the larger point. The real cognitive divide is between handwriting and typing, not between looping letters and block print. As Nature’s reporting makes clear, handwriting challenges the brain in ways that screens cannot easily replicate, particularly during early development.

There are also cultural considerations. Van der Meer points out that handwriting is part of shared human heritage, a skill that connects generations. The ability to write a note, a poem or even a grocery list by hand carries meaning beyond efficiency. In a world increasingly mediated by digital interfaces, these tactile, personal acts may hold unexpected value.

The return of cursive in New Jersey reflects a growing unease with all-digital classrooms, rather than a simple revival of tradition. Educators and policymakers are grappling with how to balance technological fluency with foundational skills that shape cognition itself. The science does not demand a wholesale return to fountain pens and copybooks, but it does suggest that abandoning handwriting entirely comes at a cost.

As schools experiment with hybrid models, blending tablets with notebooks, the looping lines of cursive may find a new place — not as a symbol of the past, but as a reminder that learning is a physical as well as a mental act. In rediscovering handwriting, educators are not turning back the clock so much as acknowledging that some old tools still shape young minds in ways no touchscreen yet can.
