Sri Lankan police have arrested a businessman on grave allegations of sexually abusing more than thirty-six children under the age of eighteen, in a case that has sent shockwaves across the country. The arrest followed a targeted raid by the Child and Women Abuse Prevention and Investigation Bureau after a formal complaint was lodged from the Kandy area, prompting an urgent investigation into the suspect’s activities.

The suspect, a 38-year-old resident of Peradeniya, was taken into custody after investigators examined electronic devices found in his possession. According to police, preliminary evidence recovered from these devices indicates that acts of sexual abuse had taken place, raising serious concerns about the scale and organisation of the alleged crimes.

Authorities have also revealed that the suspect is believed to have acted in coordination with a group of individuals, with indications that the abuse was videotaped. This discovery has intensified the investigation, as police work to determine the identities of all those involved and to establish the full extent of the offences.

The suspect is scheduled to undergo extensive questioning as investigators attempt to identify the child victims and verify additional details linked to the case. Police have initiated legal steps to secure a 72-hour detention order to allow further interrogation and evidence gathering.

Currently, the suspect is being held at the Kotahena Police Station and is expected to be produced before court in due course. A comprehensive investigation is continuing under the direct supervision of Senior Superintendent of Police Imesha Muthumala, Director of the Child and Women Abuse Prevention and Investigation Bureau, as authorities signal a firm commitment to pursuing justice in one of the most disturbing child protection cases reported in recent years.
