As climate change accelerates the spread of deserts across the planet, a decades-long environmental experiment in China is drawing renewed global attention. Covering vast stretches of northern China, the country’s “Great Green Wall” has emerged as one of the most ambitious attempts to halt desertification—an effort that, according to analysis published in Nature, may hold crucial lessons for countries struggling to keep their own landscapes from turning to dust.
Today, roughly 40 percent of Earth’s land surface is classified as dryland, encompassing deserts and water-scarce ecosystems such as grasslands and savannahs. These regions are home to more than two billion people, many of whom face increasingly harsh conditions. From encroaching sand dunes swallowing homes in Mauritania to intensifying drought pressures in Mongolia, the human and ecological toll is growing. Scientists warn that by the end of the century, drylands could cover half the planet’s land area, affecting up to five billion people.
Against this backdrop, China’s Three-North Shelterbelt programme stands out for both its scale and longevity. Launched in 1978 and expected to continue until 2050, the initiative aims to create a vast mosaic of forests and vegetation belts stretching across northern China. The goal is to stabilize shifting sands from deserts such as the Gobi and Taklamakan, protecting infrastructure, agriculture, and communities.
The results so far are striking. Forest cover in the region has nearly tripled over four decades, and the area affected by soil erosion has fallen dramatically. Dust storms, once a frequent hazard in cities like Beijing, have decreased in both intensity and frequency. These gains suggest that large-scale ecological restoration, often dismissed as overly ambitious or unsustainable, can succeed under the right conditions.
Yet the project has not been without setbacks. In some of the driest regions, newly planted trees struggle to survive, requiring repeated replanting. Early reliance on single-species plantations left some areas vulnerable to disease. Even today, more than a quarter of China’s land remains classified as desert, underscoring the limits of such interventions in extreme environments.
Globally, similar “green wall” initiatives have struggled to replicate China’s relative success. Africa’s Great Green Wall, for instance, has restored only a fraction of its targeted land area despite years of international support. Many projects falter because of poor planning, inadequate funding, and a lack of long-term maintenance. Young trees often die from drought or grazing, and communities are frequently given little incentive to sustain them.
The Nature analysis argues that China’s experience offers four key lessons for overcoming these challenges. One of the most important is redefining what success looks like. Rather than focusing solely on the number of trees planted, China has gradually shifted toward measuring broader outcomes—such as reduced dust storms, stabilized sand dunes, and improved livelihoods for local populations. This evolution reflects a recognition that ecological restoration must align with social and economic realities.
Another critical factor has been the use of targeted, locally adapted strategies. In some areas, China has deployed hardy shrubs instead of trees, while in others it has integrated renewable energy infrastructure with restoration efforts. Solar and wind farms built along desert margins not only generate power but also help anchor soil and create new economic opportunities. These hybrid approaches provide incentives for local communities to maintain and protect restored landscapes.
Innovation has also played a significant role. Techniques such as straw “chequerboards,” which involve partially burying straw to stabilize sand, have been used for decades to reduce wind erosion and support vegetation growth. More recently, digital initiatives like gamified tree-planting platforms have mobilized public participation and private funding on an unprecedented scale.
Perhaps most crucially, China’s project has benefited from sustained government commitment and long-term financing. Unlike many international efforts that rely on short-term donor funding, the Great Green Wall is embedded in national policy and supported by continuous investment. Legal frameworks require local governments to incorporate desertification control into development planning, ensuring that restoration is treated as an ongoing responsibility rather than a one-off project.
Monitoring and accountability have further strengthened the initiative. Regular national surveys, supported by satellite imagery and field verification, allow authorities to track progress and adjust strategies as needed. This data-driven approach helps identify failures early and ensures that resources are directed where they are most effective.
Despite these strengths, experts caution against viewing China’s model as a universal blueprint. Environmental conditions, economic capacities, and social dynamics vary widely across regions. In parts of Africa, for example, restoring grasslands and shrubs may be more viable than planting trees. In arid Gulf states, the high cost of water demands careful consideration of the trade-offs involved in large-scale greening.
There are also concerns about unintended consequences. Large-scale land transformation can alter local water cycles, and restrictions on grazing have, in some cases, disrupted traditional livelihoods. These complexities highlight the need for careful planning and continuous evaluation to balance ecological benefits with social impacts.
The lesson from China’s Great Green Wall is not that desertification can be easily reversed, but that it can be managed through sustained, adaptive effort. As the Nature analysis emphasizes, success depends on long-term commitment, local engagement, and the willingness to learn from both achievements and failures.
With deserts advancing and climate pressures intensifying, the stakes could not be higher.
