The Congress party has officially named VD Satheesan as the next Chief Minister of Kerala, bringing an end to nearly 10 days of political suspense following the election results declared on May 4. The announcement was made by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in New Delhi after extended consultations involving senior leadership, coalition partners, and party observers. The decision marks the conclusion of a closely watched internal contest within the party after the United Democratic Front (UDF) secured 102 seats, ending the 10-year rule of the CPM-led government under Pinarayi Vijayan.

The leadership choice followed a high-stakes internal battle between senior Congress figures, with KC Venugopal, Ramesh Chennithala, and VD Satheesan all emerging as contenders for the Chief Minister’s post. Although KC Venugopal was believed to have stronger backing among legislators, the party high command ultimately prioritized broader political factors, including public sentiment in Kerala, the views of coalition allies, and support from former KPCC presidents. These considerations played a decisive role in tipping the balance in favour of Satheesan.

Tensions within the party had spilled into public view over the past week and a half, with supporters of rival leaders putting up posters and flex boards across the state while social media became a battleground of competing claims. The Congress Legislature Party had earlier authorized the high command to make the final decision, leaving the leadership question unresolved even as the victory celebrations continued.

The final decision was reached after a series of consultations in Delhi involving senior Congress leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. AICC observers Ajay Maken and Mukul Wasnik also submitted detailed reports after meeting MLAs and coalition representatives. Despite continued discussions, including a late round of talks with KC Venugopal, the leadership deadlock persisted until the final consensus emerged in favour of Satheesan.

With the announcement, the Congress has closed a politically charged chapter that had gripped Kerala’s political landscape since the election results, paving the way for VD Satheesan to formally take charge as Chief Minister.
