Google on Wednesday unveiled its newest entry-level smartphone, the Pixel 10a, priced at $499, as the company deepens its push to bring artificial intelligence features to more affordable devices. The phone is available for preorder immediately, with shipments scheduled to begin March 5, and will be offered in Lavender, Berry, Fog, and Obsidian color options.

The Pixel 10a introduces a subtle design shift, featuring a completely flat back that allows the signature camera bar to blend seamlessly into the device’s surface so it lies flush when placed on a table. The smartphone is equipped with a 6.3-inch Actua display that the company says is 11 percent brighter than the previous generation, along with improved charging speeds and battery performance rated at more than 30 hours on a single charge, or up to 120 hours using its Extreme Battery Saver mode.

Under the hood, the device runs on the same Tensor G4 chip used in last year’s model, delivering performance continuity while focusing upgrades on software-driven experiences. It carries a 48-megapixel main camera paired with a 13-megapixel ultrawide lens, with the company positioning it as one of the strongest camera systems available in a smartphone priced under $500.

A major highlight is the expansion of AI-powered photography tools previously limited to higher-end models. The Auto Best Take feature captures multiple frames with one press of the shutter and automatically selects the most flattering version for group photos, while Camera Coach offers real-time guidance on framing, lighting, and composition to help users improve their shots.

For the first time in the A-series lineup, the phone also includes Satellite SOS, enabling users to contact emergency services even without cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity, a feature increasingly seen as critical for safety-focused mobile technology. The device will receive seven years of software and security updates, reinforcing a strategy centered on longevity and value.

The Pixel 10a does not include the PixelSnap magnetic Qi charging feature found in the flagship Pixel 10 models, signaling a clear differentiation between the budget and premium tiers even as software capabilities converge.

The launch comes just ahead of a widely anticipated new entry-level smartphone from Apple, expected to be called the iPhone 17e and priced around $599, setting the stage for intensified competition in the midrange segment as both companies race to define the next phase of AI-enabled mobile computing.

Alongside the handset, the company also announced new color options, Berry and Fog, for its Pixel Buds 2a, designed to match the latest phone and strengthen the broader ecosystem appeal.
