Alibaba’s chair, Joe Tsai, recently confirmed that the Chinese ecommerce giant will provide artificial intelligence (AI) technology for Apple’s iPhone models sold in China. This collaboration has already fueled a significant surge in Alibaba’s shares, which have risen more than 40% this year. According to Tsai, Apple was highly selective when choosing a partner in China and ultimately decided to work with Alibaba, recognizing the company’s AI capabilities to power their smartphones in the region.

Apple has been focusing on integrating AI features into its devices, aiming to offer consumers advanced capabilities that older models cannot support. However, the tech giant has encountered significant challenges in China, where the approval process for large language models is highly regulated by the government. To overcome this hurdle, Apple needed to partner with a Chinese company, which Tsai explained was necessary due to regulatory issues specific to China.

According to Financial Times, Apple explored partnerships with a number of leading AI players in China, including Baidu, ByteDance, Moonshot, Zhipu, and Tencent. These discussions were part of Apple’s broader effort to introduce AI features into its smartphones in China, a market where local rivals have aggressively rolled out AI-driven capabilities on their devices. With this, Apple has faced the dual pressure of staying competitive in China while navigating the country’s complex regulatory environment. In particular, Chinese authorities have been keen on approving AI models for public use, with more than 300 domestic models already approved.

Despite Alibaba’s official confirmation of its partnership with Apple, it is still unclear whether this agreement is exclusive. Sources close to the matter have suggested that Apple may still be considering other Chinese AI models for its devices. Tsai’s comments highlight the growing trend of companies seeking local AI partners to ensure smooth market entry and regulatory approval, especially in countries with stringent cybersecurity and data laws.

This partnership comes at a critical moment for Apple in China, where its business has been facing challenges, including rising geopolitical tensions that have led many state employees to abandon iPhones. In Apple’s most recent financial quarter, sales in China dropped by 11% year-on-year to $18.5 billion, representing just 15% of the company’s total revenue. The increasing popularity of local Chinese smartphone brands, equipped with advanced AI features, has put further pressure on Apple to keep up in this competitive market.

For Alibaba, this partnership is a significant boost. The company’s AI developments, particularly its Qwen 2.5 model, have gained considerable attention and market traction, especially after the release of DeepSeek’s model, which shocked global markets with its capabilities and low development costs. Alibaba’s shares have skyrocketed as a result, signaling investor optimism about the company’s future in AI and its strengthened position in the tech ecosystem.

While Alibaba declined to comment further on the specifics of the deal, the partnership marks a pivotal moment in Apple’s efforts to solidify its presence in China, as well as in Alibaba’s ongoing rise as a leading force in the global AI race. As both companies look to navigate complex regulatory landscapes, their collaboration will likely shape the future of AI-powered devices in China.
