In the wake of a devastating explosion and fire at Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, has issued a message of condolences and called for a comprehensive investigation into the incident. The powerful blast, which occurred on Saturday, has tragically claimed the lives of 40 people and injured over 900.

In his message released on Sunday evening, Ayatollah Khamenei extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, offering his support and prayers to those affected by the disaster. The Leader also praised the selflessness of citizens who came forward to donate blood for the injured, underscoring the spirit of unity in times of crisis.

Khamenei urged security and judicial authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the explosion, emphasizing the need to uncover any negligence or deliberate actions behind the tragedy. “The authorities must work quickly to investigate all aspects of this event to ensure accountability,” Khamenei stated.

The explosion at Shahid Rajaee Port, Iran’s largest and most modern port, was caused by a fuel tanker explosion, though the exact reasons behind the blast are still under investigation. The fire triggered by the explosion was eventually contained by Sunday afternoon, and the port resumed operations shortly thereafter.

Iran’s President, Masoud Pezeshkian, declared Monday as a day of national mourning to honor the victims of the explosion. Government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani made the announcement on Sunday, and a three-day mourning period has been declared in Hormozgan province, where Bandar Abbas is located.

President Pezeshkian arrived in Bandar Abbas on Sunday to oversee rescue operations and meet with the injured. During his visit, he took the opportunity to visit hospitals and speak with medical personnel. The Iranian Red Crescent Society has provided updated statistics, confirming the deaths of at least 40 people and the injuries of over 900 others. The situation remains dire, with authorities working to identify victims who suffered severe burns.

The explosion has led to an outpouring of support from both domestic and international communities. In an unprecedented gesture of solidarity, Russia has sent three firefighting aircraft, including two B-200s and one Ilyushin-76, to assist in containing the fire. The Iranian Ambassador to Moscow, Kazem Jalali, expressed his gratitude for the swift response from Russia, highlighting the strategic and diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Jalali, in a statement posted on social media, expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and praised the “depth of friendship and strategic cooperation” between Iran and Russia in times of crisis. Russia’s swift assistance underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing large-scale disasters.

The explosion and the subsequent fire have left a profound impact on Iran, with authorities vowing to hold accountable those responsible for the tragedy. As investigations continue, Iranian officials are committed to uncovering the full details surrounding the incident.

The explosion at Shahid Rajaee Port serves as a somber reminder of the risks faced by critical infrastructure and the need for rigorous safety measures to prevent such disasters in the future. The Iranian leadership, as well as the citizens of Bandar Abbas, remain united in their resolve to recover and rebuild from this tragic event.
