abbi Yoel Alter, leader of the ultra-Orthodox Lev Tahor cult, was arrested in Guatemala following an international operation led by Interpol on human trafficking charges.

Rabbi Yoel Alter, the 35-year-old leader of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish cult Lev Tahor (meaning “Pure Heart” in Hebrew), has been arrested in Guatemala following a coordinated operation led by Interpol. Alter was apprehended after Mexico submitted an official extradition request, where he faces serious human trafficking charges.

Lev Tahor, founded in Israel in 1988, has long been under intense scrutiny for its involvement in a series of disturbing crimes, including child abuse, forced marriages of minors, and human trafficking. The group, known for its strict religious practices, has been the subject of investigations by various international authorities for its exploitation of vulnerable individuals, particularly children.

In December 2024, Guatemalan authorities launched a major rescue operation, freeing 160 children and 40 women from the control of the Lev Tahor cult. The operation was a critical intervention in what authorities described as an “evil” and manipulative system of abuse and coercion, in which cult members were subjected to forced labor, restricted freedom, and marriages at an age far below the legal threshold.

The arrest of Rabbi Yoel Alter represents a significant breakthrough in the ongoing efforts to dismantle the cult and hold its leaders accountable for their criminal activities. The extradition request from Mexico underscores the international nature of the case, with authorities across multiple countries working together to bring justice to those who have suffered at the hands of Lev Tahor.
