In a significant reshuffle reflecting Israel’s internal political crisis, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Tuesday that Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has been dismissed. Gallant, who led Israel’s defense efforts during the recent conflict with Hamas, will be replaced by current Foreign Minister Israel Katz, with Minister without Portfolio Gideon Sa’ar assuming Katz’s former role as foreign minister.
In a statement, Netanyahu cited a “breakdown of trust” with Gallant, noting that while their working relationship was productive at the outset of the conflict, recent disagreements over military management and strategic decisions eroded their cooperation. He claimed Gallant’s decisions, some of which were reportedly shared publicly, had contravened cabinet consensus and exposed sensitive information that, according to Netanyahu, “fell into the hands of the enemy.”
Reports indicate that the discord between Netanyahu and Gallant intensified as leaks about military strategy allegedly benefited Iran, one of Israel’s key adversaries in the region. Analysts suggest Netanyahu’s dismissal of Gallant may be intended to deflect accountability for these breaches, which have troubled his administration in recent months.
The decision has garnered attention internationally, with the Biden administration reportedly taken aback by the abrupt shift. Gallant has ties to the U.S. Democratic Party, adding a geopolitical dimension to the dismissal, especially given the timing, which coincided with the U.S. elections.
