Sri Lankan police confirmed that 12 people were killed in road accidents across the country over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of road fatalities since January 1, 2026, to 64. The incidents involved a mix of buses, motorcycles, cars, and pedestrian accidents, underscoring ongoing safety challenges on the nation’s roads.
In Murushamutei on the Paranthan-Mullaithivu road, four people died when a bus collided with a motorcycle. In the Oyamaduwa area of Anuradhapura, a crash between a three-wheeler and a motorcycle left one person dead and seven others injured; the injured were admitted to Anuradhapura Hospital.
Three fatalities occurred in Navadankulama, Mundalama, Puttalam, when a car and a van collided head-on, killing two women and one man. Another passenger sustained injuries and was hospitalized. Additional deaths were reported in Bogambara, Radawadunna, Poththagoda, and Atavilluwa. A 65-year-old woman was killed by a private bus near the Bogambara bus terminal, while an 81-year-old Polonnaruwa resident died after being struck by a cab on the Colombo-Kandy road.
Other fatal accidents included a motorcycle collision near the Poththoda cemetery on the Negombo-Mirigama road, claiming the life of a 64-year-old from Katana, Kandawala, and a crash between a motorcycle and a lorry on a by-pass in Attawilluwa, Puttalam, which killed a 30-year-old local resident.
