Sri Lanka’s ruling party, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), has strongly condemned the recent military action by the United States in Venezuela, describing it as an unjustified violation of a sovereign nation. In a detailed statement, the party criticized the US for “invading [Venezuela] and kidnapping its elected President, Maduro, and his wife,” framing the operation as a direct assault on Venezuela’s independence and the will of its people.
The JVP emphasized that, as in any free and sovereign state, Venezuelans have the right to determine their own future and choose their leaders. “No power has the right to infringe on that,” the statement said, asserting that international norms of democracy, human rights, freedom, and state independence are universally accepted and should not be overridden by force.
Highlighting the modern global consensus, the party argued that military interventions or invasions are incompatible with the principles of a civilized society. “Violating them for any reason and carrying out military interventions or invasions of countries is not justified in the modern civilized world,” the statement added, asserting that no responsible actor would endorse such forceful actions.
Concluding its message, the JVP reaffirmed its opposition to the US operation and expressed solidarity with Venezuela. “We at the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna condemn this military aggression against Venezuela by the United States of America and stand for the survival and independence of Venezuela,” the party said, reiterating its support for the sovereignty and self-determination of the Venezuelan people.
