The Russian Embassy in Colombo has addressed recent media reports regarding Sri Lanka’s bid to join the BRICS alliance. In a press release issued on November 9, the Embassy clarified that the reports claiming Sri Lanka’s application was rejected are misleading.

The Embassy pointed to an article in the Sunday Island that suggested Sri Lanka’s bid for BRICS membership had been denied. According to the statement, Sri Lanka has indeed submitted an application, and the Russian BRICS Chairship has welcomed this interest. However, the Embassy emphasized that the application process involves a period of review, consultation, and consensus-building among BRICS members.

“The application will be considered by BRICS in due course in full consultation and consensus, along with bids from numerous other countries,” the Embassy stated, dismissing the reports of rejection as inaccurate.
