A Russian tourist has reportedly been sexually assaulted at a hotel in Ahungalla, prompting local authorities to launch an investigation.

The victim, a 41-year-old woman, had been celebrating her birthday and consuming alcohol before returning to her hotel room. According to her complaint filed with the police, a hotel employee allegedly entered her room and raped her. Law enforcement is actively pursuing the case, and further details about the suspect and the investigation remain forthcoming.

This incident comes amidst an influx of Russian tourists to Sri Lanka, bolstered by Russia’s Red Wings airline. The carrier has brought approximately 100,000 tourists to the island nation, contributing an estimated $165 million in revenue. On the same day as the incident, another flight carrying 410 Russian tourists landed at Mattala International Airport, underscoring the growing importance of Russian tourism to Sri Lanka’s economy.
