US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung, today expressed strong optimism about the future of Sri Lanka’s relationship with the United States, emphasizing the nation’s support for the island’s new government. Ambassador Chung made the remarks during a meeting with Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, following her attendance at the inaugural session of Sri Lanka’s 10th Parliament. The session was marked by a traditional tea party, hosted by Parliament at the conclusion of the President’s policy statement.

Ambassador Chung hailed the recent political shifts in Sri Lanka as “historic” and assured that the United States would continue to back the Sri Lankan government’s initiatives. She noted, “We are very happy. I spoke today. I told our investors to come to Sri Lanka… come and invest… now there is a new government.”
