Sri Lanka was one of 119 countries to support a Russian-backed resolution at the UN General Assembly titled “Combating Glorification of Nazism, Neo-Nazism, and Other Practices That Contribute to Fueling Contemporary Forms of Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia, and Related Intolerance.” The resolution passed with 119 votes in favor, 53 votes against, and 10 abstentions.
The document, which condemns any efforts to revise the outcomes of World War II or glorify Nazi ideology, was strongly supported by almost all African nations, including South Africa and Lesotho, alongside Sri Lanka and the Maldives. However, several countries, including Germany, Italy, Canada, the United States, Ukraine, and Japan, voted against it.
The Russian-sponsored resolution emphasizes the importance of rejecting neo-Nazism, the glorification of Nazi figures, and the Waffen SS organization in any form. It also stresses the need to remember the lessons of World War II and combat racism, xenophobia, and intolerance in all their forms.
