AI’s Future: Promises, Perils, and Global Risks

At the DealBook Summit, a prominent discussion took place about the transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential to shape the future. Ten leading experts gathered to explore the technology’s opportunities and risks, offering varied perspectives on its implications for humanity. The event, moderated by Kevin Roose, technology columnist for The New York Times, focused on the central question: will AI usher in an era of prosperity, or will it lead to unforeseen dangers?

The conversation opened with the potential for AI to revolutionize multiple sectors. During a live poll, seven of the experts agreed that there was at least a 50 percent chance AI would achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI)—a state where AI can perform any intellectual task a human can—by 2030. However, many of the opportunities they discussed are expected to unfold much sooner. Josh Woodward, Vice President of Google Labs, highlighted the role of AI in enhancing creativity, suggesting that AI could aid humans in producing art and content in new and diverse mediums. Similarly, Peter Lee, President of Microsoft Research, painted a picture of AI accelerating medical research, from drug discovery to predicting severe weather patterns. In everyday life, AI could enhance consumer experiences, making tasks like preparing meals or improving skincare more efficient. Furthermore, AI could revolutionize education, with Sarah Guo, founder of Conviction, noting that AI could help personalize lesson plans, making education more accessible. This would also extend to fields like healthcare and legal services, where AI could democratize access to specialized knowledge.

While these developments are promising, experts also raised alarms about the risks associated with AI. Geoffrey Hinton, the Nobel Prize-winning researcher and former Google scientist, warned of the potential for AI to exacerbate issues such as misinformation and autonomous weaponry. His concerns echoed those raised by over 1,000 AI leaders and researchers who signed an open letter last year, urging a pause on the development of advanced AI systems due to the profound risks they posed to society. In fact, a separate letter from leading AI labs including OpenAI, DeepMind, and Anthropic emphasized that mitigating AI’s existential threats should be a global priority, on par with the dangers posed by pandemics and nuclear warfare.

The conversation also turned to geopolitical risks, with Dan Hendrycks, Director of the Center for AI Safety, pointing out how AI’s reliance on key resources, like microchips sourced from Taiwan, could create vulnerabilities in the event of geopolitical conflict. Alexander Karp, CEO of Palantir Technologies, suggested that the U.S. might need to accelerate its AI development, akin to the Manhattan Project, to avoid falling behind international competitors. However, Marc Raibert, founder of Boston Dynamics, disagreed, arguing that major companies like Meta, Google, and OpenAI were already heavily investing in AI, making a centralized government effort unnecessary. Eugenia Kuyda, founder of Replika, called for immigration reform to allow more AI scientists into the U.S., claiming that barriers to entry were limiting the country’s potential to lead in AI research.

Another topic of concern was the economic impact of AI. In a live poll, six out of ten panelists believed that AI would ultimately create more jobs than it would eliminate. Ajeya Cotra, who leads grant-making research on AI risks at Open Philanthropy, compared the rapid acceleration of AI development to the Industrial Revolution, predicting that AI could be a driving force for economic growth. However, some experts cautioned that the economic benefits of AI were not guaranteed. Tim Wu, a professor at Columbia Law School, warned that AI could exacerbate economic inequality, potentially leading to geopolitical instability. He compared the consequences of AI-driven economic disruption to the impacts of the Industrial Revolution, which contributed to the tensions that led to the World Wars.

Perhaps most ominously, some experts warned of the potential for AI to empower bad actors. Cotra described a future where AI dominates decision-making, making it nearly impossible for humans to challenge its authority. She feared that individuals with access to AI could wield unprecedented power, using it for nefarious purposes. A chilling scenario was presented in which machines, running on military and governmental systems, could go rogue, leaving humanity with few options to regain control.

The immediate concern for many is the flood of false content that AI could generate. Hinton pointed out that AI might soon be capable of producing so much misinformation that distinguishing fact from fiction could become increasingly difficult. Woodward, from Google Labs, referred to this phenomenon as “AI slop” and suggested that it could ultimately lead to a greater appreciation for human-created content, as people begin to value taste and discernment in a world overwhelmed by machine-generated material.
