The Venezuelan Supreme Court has fined TikTok $10 million in response to dangerous challenges circulating on the platform, which were linked to the tragic deaths of three adolescents. The fine, announced by the VTV broadcaster, must be paid within 10 days.
The lawsuit, accepted by the court in late November, accused TikTok of inadequate content moderation leading to the fatalities. In addition to the financial penalty, the court has ordered TikTok to establish a representative office in Venezuela. This office will be tasked with monitoring the app’s operations and implementing enhanced safety measures for users.
Furthermore, the court has directed TikTok to form a commission that includes the families affected by the incidents. This body will assess the damages caused by the platform’s failure to control harmful content.
The Venezuelan government announced plans to allocate the fine to a newly created “TikTok Victims” fund, aimed at supporting those impacted by the platform’s negligence.
