Tulip Siddiq, the UK Treasury’s Economic Secretary, is facing renewed scrutiny over her links to properties worth approximately £4.5 million ($5.5 million), connected to allies of her aunt, Sheikh Hasina, the former Bangladeshi prime minister accused of human rights abuses and corruption. As reported by The Times, Siddiq and her family have lived in multiple London properties gifted or owned by associates of Hasina, raising questions about financial transparency.
Siddiq, the Labour MP for Hampstead and Highgate, previously lived in a flat on Finchley Road, Hampstead, valued at £650,000 ($835,000), gifted to her teenage sister, Azmina, by Moin Ghani, a lawyer and ally of Sheikh Hasina’s regime. Azmina sold the property in 2021. Siddiq also owns a flat in King’s Cross, worth £500,000 ($640,000), gifted to her by another Hasina associate, Abdul Motalif, in 2004.
Additionally, Siddiq resides in a £2.1 million ($2.7 million) Finchley home, rented from Abdul Karim Nazim, a property developer and member of Hasina’s Awami League, while her mother, Sheikh Rehana, lives in a Golders Green house reportedly worth £1.2 million ($1.5 million), owned via an offshore trust linked to another Awami League figure.
These disclosures have raised questions about Siddiq’s ability to oversee her role in tackling financial crime and corruption, a portfolio that includes sanctions and countering illicit finance. Siddiq has denied any wrongdoing and claims to be the victim of politically motivated smears tied to the fall of her aunt’s regime in Bangladesh.
Her ties to Hasina’s government have long been scrutinized. Siddiq served on Hasina’s official delegation to the UN in 2011 and was photographed alongside Vladimir Putin in 2013 during the signing of a controversial $1.5 billion Russian nuclear deal now under investigation. While Siddiq has sought to distance herself from her aunt, her family’s housing arrangements and their connections to Awami League allies continue to draw attention.
Siddiq has maintained her innocence, stating the allegations are baseless. Despite this, the revelations cast a shadow over her ministerial responsibilities and raise further questions about her family’s financial entanglements.
