China Develops Revolutionary Laser Camera for Spotting Faces from Space

China has unveiled a new laser camera system that outperforms the current best spy cameras, including those manufactured by US defense giant Lockheed Martin. This high-tech camera, recently tested near Qinghai Lake, is capable of spotting intricate details, such as human faces, from distances over 100 kilometers (62 miles) in low-Earth orbit.

The camera’s capabilities are nothing short of revolutionary. It can detect objects as small as 1.7mm (0.03 inches), far surpassing the performance of current US-made devices that only achieve a resolution of 20mm (0.79 inches) at just 1.6 kilometers (1 mile). Notably, the Chinese laser system can also determine the distance to objects with an astounding accuracy of 15.6mm (0.61 inches).

This technological leap opens up vast new possibilities in military surveillance, satellite monitoring, and reconnaissance. With the ability to distinguish details as fine as a human face from orbit, China’s new device could offer unprecedented levels of scrutiny of foreign military satellites and other high-security objects from space.

The camera’s performance is said to be 100 times better than what can be achieved with traditional spy cameras and telescopes that rely on lenses. The South China Morning Post reports that this system’s success is based on a combination of cutting-edge technology, including a 103 W wideband laser and an advanced real-time digital data processing system.
