In a bold step toward shaping a future-ready generation, the United Arab Emirates Cabinet has approved a groundbreaking initiative to make Artificial Intelligence (AI) a compulsory subject across all government schools, from kindergarten through Grade 12. The new curriculum will be rolled out starting the upcoming academic year.

The announcement was made by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, as part of the nation’s broader vision to prepare its youth for the technological challenges and opportunities of the future.

“Our responsibility is to equip our children for a time unlike ours,” Sheikh Mohammed stated on X (formerly Twitter), underlining the need for both technical education and ethical awareness in today’s fast-changing world.

Developed by the UAE Ministry of Education, the new AI curriculum is designed to be comprehensive and age-appropriate. It introduces students to fundamental concepts such as data, algorithms, machine learning, and real-world AI applications. Importantly, it also includes modules on ethical considerations, data privacy, and algorithmic fairness—ensuring that students are not only technologically literate but also socially and ethically aware.

With this initiative, the UAE becomes one of the first countries in the world to implement a mandatory AI education program across all grade levels. While nations like Singapore and the United Kingdom have begun incorporating AI into certain aspects of their educational systems, the UAE’s move represents a fully integrated, nationwide approach.

Education experts say this structured and progressive curriculum could become a model for other countries seeking to incorporate AI into primary and secondary education. By embedding AI from the earliest stages of learning, the UAE aims to cultivate a generation capable of understanding and shaping the technological world rather than merely adapting to it.

The initiative marks another chapter in the UAE’s ongoing education reform journey, which has seen a shift from traditional teaching methods toward innovative, future-focused learning strategies.

With this landmark decision, the UAE reinforces its position as a global leader in both education and emerging technologies, signaling a strong commitment to empowering youth with the skills and awareness needed in the age of artificial intelligence.
