Humans will be living and thriving in vast “space oases” by 2040, according to an ambitious new vision released by the European Space Agency (ESA) — a bold future that The Times UK describes as both awe-inspiring and increasingly plausible. In these futuristic habitats, located in orbit around Earth, on the Moon, and even on Mars, people will not merely survive but flourish, supported by advanced life support systems, intelligent automation, and resilient, self-sustaining technologies.

ESA’s recently published Technology 2040 document outlines a dramatic shift in humanity’s relationship with space. No longer just a frontier to explore, space is now seen as a territory to inhabit, mine, and manage. Massive structures, unconstrained by the size limitations of Earth-launched rockets, will be assembled or manufactured directly in orbit or on extraterrestrial surfaces. These “mammoth constructions” are envisioned as essential platforms for habitation, research, and industrial activity across the solar system.

Artificially intelligent robots, capable of independently conducting deep-space expeditions, will explore Martian craters, alien oceans, and subsurface caves on distant worlds. With such autonomy, these machines could go where humans cannot, pushing the boundaries of discovery without waiting for instructions from Earth. Simultaneously, comets and asteroids will be mined for both scientific insight and valuable resources, a process ESA believes will become routine.

ESA Director-General Josef Aschbacher is calling for all ESA member states, including Britain, to fully support the 2040 strategy. Speaking to The Times UK, he emphasized that this isn’t just a conceptual vision but a practical, strategic direction that requires political will, financial backing, and sustained technological effort. “This is not just a road map; it is a call to action,” Aschbacher stated, urging nations to recognize that space expansion is “not a luxury but a necessity.”

The document closes with a sweeping declaration: “In this new era, humans will thrive among the stars, marked by innovation, sustainability, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. The cosmos will no longer be a distant frontier, but a home.” With Europe’s space leadership clearly staking a bold claim on the future, the coming decades could redefine what it means to be human — not just on Earth, but across the solar system.
